Really helpful stuff - common sense, but really easy to forget, so useful to have a check-list.
Many thanks,

.. And the idea of labelling it as "bad drawing" is even better because you start off with no expectations - you can't fail!

Great article Eli. You're very right about the pressure and "paralysis" when faced with being creative. It doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes faced with the thought of producing a perfect design, you seize up with the fear of it not being perfect enough! When really all you have to do is let go, stop worrying and get the ideas out - it doesn't matter if they're awful or half done - they'll help you get on the path to the final "perfect" piece!

I was just thinking this exact train of thought over the weekend! I have to record some video of me playing guitar in order to improve, as I am on an online course at the moment. The angst of actually committing to a recording, of making all of my mistakes visible to the world, is stopping me from doing it! I decided to set myself a goal of just sitting down and playing without caring about errors in order to get that out of the way. It doesn't matter if I record a video a day for a fortnight, just so long as I get over the initial nerves of pushing out of my comfort zone and feeling happy with myself for going through the process!

Thanks for your comment - I would say that exactly the same principles apply. Once a month is fine to keep in touch. Include links to your top four or five posts, write something special just for subscribers or include a video or podcast just for them. If you blog frequently, why not pick a selection of posts which have a similar theme and build your newsletter around that theme?

If you'd like some help, please feel free to get in touch.

I suppose you’re right, but what if one doesn’t blog about a specific topic but more “general” topics like how to make some money online, a little bit of SEO, some facebook/twitter and tech news – and some personal blog stuff too …

What would you e-mail your subscribers about, in that case? Just a 2-3 times a month email with a list of recent posts to get some more traffic / attention to your posts?

I started my own morning ritual after hearing about yours, and I've noticed recently that I've been letting it lapse which is what we often do when we're trying to acquyire new habits. No matter how much we may enjoy the new habit, it's still easier to go back to our old ways.

Interestingly though, I also find that in the middle of lapsing, I'm thinking to myself, "Actually, I really miss my new ritual - and what's more, I'd like to add things to it to make it even better!"

ANd now that I've got out of my ow way, I know that pretty soon I'll have the new improved new ritual designed and ready to go, and it will be lovely :-)
